What Is Love

What Is Love is an interdisciplinary comparative project aimed at unifying past perceived differences through collaboratively redefining the word 'love'.

The concept of love has been the inspiration behind some of our greatest works of art, philosophies, and most severe behaviours.  While Webster’s Dictionary defines love as “a feeling of strong or constant affection for a person,” this uniform definition precludes our understanding that the human experience of love is varied.

Fama began What Is Love in response to this standardized definition, seeking a more current communal and relatable definition to the word 'love'. Through the months of May - October 2015, she drove over 17,000 kilometres across Canada and the USA in "Debbie", a 1977 RV she remodelled to be a travelling photo studio. Fama set up at over 20 locations, both pre-determined events chosen for their diversity and random stops along the way. She captured over 300 interactions with interested passersby, asking the same set of questions and documenting their individual conversations on love through image and audio.

As part of the What Is Love project, 70 individual short story videos play, one after the other, in a 2.5hr installation video (sampled above). Still image portraits are shown, paired with recorded audio, changing in timed response with the shutter clicks from Fama’s camera, as specific questions are asked and answered. In addition to the video, a quadriptych image of each participant has been paired with transcribed responses to Fama's question. In the quadriptych, head and shoulder portraits appear in a row, on a white background, as follows: straight on, eyes closed, considering their response to the question, and after their response has been shared.  The project also includes over 100 road shots depicting the journey across North America, and a limited-edition book containing 70 quadriptychs without transcriptions.

What Is Love is within Wabisabi Butterfly, an umbrella project founded by Fama in 2010 with the concept of bringing together adult survivors of trauma and sexual abuse to form safe, respectful, inclusive communities through engaging in the arts and thus, together, creating collaborative change. Wabisabi is an ideology centered on acceptance of transience and the perfection that can be found within imperfection, when paired with the Butterfly, a symbol of change emerging after a self-contained self-digestive chrysalis period, creates Wabisabi Butterfly, a space for creative change through understanding and re-emergance.

Partial funding for the What Is Love project was provided by community through KICKSTARTER
