WHAT IS LOVE

is a multi-layered comparative photography project aimed at unifying past perceived differences through social practise, creatively and collaboratively redefining the word “love”.

The concept of love has been the driving force behind the creation of some of our greatest works of art, our philosophies, and our most severe behaviors.  While Webster’s Dictionary defines love as “a feeling of strong or constant affection for a person”, this uniform definition precludes our understanding that the human experience of love is varied.

Fama began What Is Love in response to this standardized definition. Through the months of May to October 2015, she drove over 17,000 kilometers across Canada and the USA in "Debbie", a 1977 RV she remodeled to be a travelling photo studio. Fama set up at over twenty locations, both pre-determined events chosen for their diversity and random stops along the way. She captured over 300 interactions with interested passersby, asking the same set of questions and documenting their individual conversations on love through image and audio.

As part of the final works included in the What is Love project, 70 individual short story videos have been created and played one after the other in a 2.5 hour installation video (sampled above, currently only shown in full during gallery showings). Captured photographic still images are shown paired with recorded audio, changing in timed response with the shutter clicks from Fama’s camera as specific questions are asked and answered.

In addition to the video, a quadriptych image of each participant has been created and the responses have been transcribed. Within the quadriptych, four head and shoulder portraits appear in a row, on a white background, as follows: straight on, eyes closed, considering their response to the question and after their response has been shared.  To complete the project, over 100 road shots depicting the journey across North America and an 8”X8” book depicting 70 quadriptychs without transcriptions have been created (for veiwing currently in the shows only).

What Is Love has been created within the Wabisabi Butterfly umbrella project, founded by Fama in 2010 with the concept of bringing together adult survivors of trauma and sexual abuse to form safe, respectful and inclusive communities engaged in the arts and collaborative positive change. An element found within "Wabisabi" is an acceptance of transience and finding perfection within imperfection. A butterfly is a symbol of change and transience itself, being formed after a caterpillar enters into a self-contained cocoon chrysalis period involving self-digestion, emerging fully transformed.

Much gratitude to all who have collaborated this project in any way, it could not have been created without you.
